Multimillion pound improvement scheme on the Trent Valley Railway line to increase the speed and capacity of the existing line. The railway is currently a two track line and it is being upgraded to four tracks. This involves a large amount of earthworks and increasing the size of many of the structures crossing above and crossing under the track.


Ale Piling carried out the installation of numerous cofferdams and retaining wall across the site to allow construction of bridge abutments and wingwalls. The equipment used on site allowed all of the installations to be carried out outside of rail possessions, whilst still maintaining the extensive requirements of Network Rail, and reducing our clients program and costs on site.

Ale Piling supplied various different pieces of plant to site to apply with the railway criteria and ground conditions on site. The work were carried out in three phases; pre-augering, installation of the sheet piles and backdriving. Pre-augering was carried out using a telescopic auger mounted on a low drill. This has the ability to drill up to 20m if required, but on this site on 9m depth maximum was required. The sheet piles were then installed using one of our side grip rigs, positioned and limited in operation so that in a worse case scenario we would not effect the Network Rail "zone of influence".

Finally the sheet piles were driven to depth in the hard sandstone using our excavator mounted hydraulic impact hammer. The sheet pile sections and equipment were chosen by us to ensure the correct penetration in to the ground was achieved.

Materials used were 6-9m long PU 25 sheet piles, Omega and V20 corner sections.

Ground Conditions were made for first 2-3m. Various sandy layers. Sand stone after 4m+.
